Since John Vaughan Thompson, inspired by the marine bioluminescence of small crustaceans, invented the plankton net in 1816 to the modern state of plankton ecology that uses high technological tools (sophisticated nets with complex opening-closing systems, digital cameras, videos, and satellite telemetry), it has been a long journey of discoveries and challenges to understand marine life in our oceans. The book Plankton: A Worldwide Guide, authored by Tom Jackson and Jennifer Parker, published by Princeton University Press in 2024, is a modern and outstanding outreach book with 224 pages that explores the beauty of megadiversity and ecological function of the frequently unnoticed freshwater and marine plankton in the world. Tom Jackson is a science writer with many popular books for children and adults, and Jennifer Parker is a zoologist, paleoanthropologist, and an artist with a passion for wildlife conservation. Dr. Andrew Hirst, a British well-recognized scientist and expert in ecology, physiology, and life history of marine zooplankton in response to environmental change, acts as consultant editor and authors the foreword section. The book greatly benefited from editors that stand out in design (Anna Gatt), picture research (Lattie Greenwood), and illustrations (John Woodcock). Together, they produced an outstanding balanced book based on strong scientific rigor, beautiful photographs of plankton organisms, and an easy-to-read text that immerses you in the plankton universe of the world's oceans. The authors skillfully weave together scientific information with engaging storytelling, making the book accessible to a wide audience. From my perspective, this book shows how amazing large creatures are in nature, but even more amazing are the small creatures!
