Egg, larval and juvenile stages of Chaetodipterus zonatus are described from eggs caught in Bahía Magdalena, Baja California Sur, Mexico, reared in laboratory and from field-juveniles, collected at the same locality. The time of maintenance was 36 days, with mean temperature of 29.5°C and natural photoperiod. The larvae were fed on the rotifer Brahionus plicatilis and nauplii of Artemia salina. The eggs have a smooth chorion with mean diameter of 1.08 mm. minimal periviteline space and one oil globule mean diameter of were 0.13 mm. The mean size of the newly hatched larvae was 1.8 mm notochord length (NL); the absorption of yolk sac occurs at 2.5 mm (NL) and the notochord flexion at 3.7 mm standard length (SL); the larvae are robust with conspicuous cephalie spines and scales with minute spines, the patterns of pigmentation are characteristic and useful to identify early stages. The maximum size obtained in laboratory was 17.5 mm (SL) and holding to the juvenile stage in wild conditions was 33.3 mm (SL). The tables of morphometric, measurements characteristics, meristic and cephalic spination are based on cleared and stined specimens. Likewise the scaling, cephalic spination and pigmentation patterns are described and the different stages illustrated.
