Influence of environmental factors on nutritional condition of spiny lobster Panulirus argus (Decapoda: Palinuridae)

Environmental influenceon lobster’s physiology is a topic little addressedaround the world. We determined the impact of biotic (food availability) andabiotic (temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) environmental factors onnutritional condition of Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804) from the Caibarienfishing region, Cuba. Eleven sites were sampled from 2010 to 2015, during dryand rainy seasons. Blood Refractive Index (BRI) and Kcl (total weight /carapace length) were used as nutritional condition indicators. Benthic food availabilityindex (BFAI) was also determined. BRI and Kcl varied significantly among sitesand years, higher values were found at edge sites, and during the dry season. Spatialvariations were significant only for BFAI, showing higher values at edge sites.Salinity showed interannual differences, withlowest value in 2013. Also, BFAI gradually increased between 2010 and 2015. Temperaturewas higher during rainy season while salinity was the lowest. Dissolved oxygen andBFAI did not show differences between seasons. Generalized Additive Model (GAM)for Kcl was 84.8% deviance explained (R2 = 77.6%), showing anenvironmental important influence on lobster’s nutritional condition. “Site”, dissolvedoxygen, and BFAI had significant impacts on Kcl. GAM for BRI was 34.6% devianceexplained (R2 = 25.3%). Only salinity significantly impacted BRI.
