Heterodontus francisci is a benthic shark caught with gill nets on the western coast of Baja California Sur (B.C.S.), Mexico. It´s capture is considered as by catch; however, it is frequent during the year and is important as for local consumption. The objective of this research is to describe the reproductive biology of this species, including morphometric analysis and histological descriptions of their gonads, as well as the estimate of the size of first sexual maturity (L50%). The samples were obtained in the fishing fields close to Bahía Tortugas, BCS, from 2012 to 2017. A number of 331 organisms were registered (180 males and 151 females) with a sex ratio of 0.83M: 1H and sizes from 45 cm to 92 cm of total length. Macroscopic and microscopic analyzes of 98 gonads (31 females and 67 males) were performed. The average length of sexual maturity (L50%) in females was 76.7 cm and for males 67.4 cm in total length. Histological analysis showed that the testes of this species have a diametric structure; whereas females have an external asynchronous functional ovary and four morphofunctional zones in the oviducal gland. No sperm store was registered. This information provides biological data such as the size of first maturity to, recommend fishing management measures for this species.

Palabras clave: histology; oviducal gland; size of first sexual maturity
