The seasonal succession of the abundance of 19 taxa of zooplankton collected monthly (November 2010-December 2011) at a coastal station (-104 W, 19 ° N Bay Barra de Navidad, Jalisco) was analyzed hydro-climatic conditions as a function of seasonal hydroclimatic variability. Upwelling events in this region typically occur during February-June (2004-2014 decadal average). However, during 2011 upwelling conditions prevailed atypically during most of the year (except Jun-Jul, stratified conditions). This caused abnormally cold conditions and a shallow (> 20 m) top layer of hypoxic (<1.5 ml L-1). Under these conditions crustaceans dominated the total abundance (94%) [copepods (69.7%), decapod larvae (8.1%), cladocerans (5.9%) ostracods (5.1%) and euphausiids (3.5% without larvae caliptopis)]. Total zooplankton abundance was highest in November 2010 until May gradually decreasing until reaching the lowest values ??in June and August and increased to moderate abundances from September to December 2011. The relative abundance trend showed a clear succession of zooplankton groups moderately increasing the diversity of groups during the transition period from mixed to stratified water conditions (May-Jun). Our study shows that this tropical zone can be similar to the Gulf of California conditions with intensified upwelling events in time and intensity into a seasonal succession typical of subtropical ecosystems.
