Authorship, publication dates and prevailing usage of names for some species of the genus Eucinostomus Baird et Girard, 1855 (Perciformes: Gerreidae)

José De La Cruz-Agüero

The genus Eucinostomus (commonly named mojarras or silver-biddies) proposed about 160 years ago has one of the largest list of specific synonyms in the family Gerreidae. Since its diagnosis the specific composition of the genus has been controversial, being considered by some authors as the most diverse and taxonomically complicated group of the family in the Neotropics. Currently some confusion exists regarding the correct usage of names for various species. The purpose of this paper was to review and provide the arguments, based on the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, for correct use of names, authorship and publication dates of about half of the species considered valid within the genus.

Palabras clave: Eucinostomus; Gerreidae; taxonomy; nomenclature; synonymy; authorship; date of publication; prevailing usage
