Copepods with a parasitic lifestyle (Huys and Boxshall, 1991) are represented in the orders of Calanoida, Harpacticoida, Monstrilloida, Cyclopoida, Poecilostomatoida and Siphonostomatoida(Ho, 2001). The number of parasitic copepod species described worldwide has been estimated at4224 taxa (Ho, 2001), with only 1% in doubt of the correct determination (Incertae sedis); however, these numbers need to be updated (Morales-Serna and Perez-Ponce de Leon, 2012). In Mexico, we have identified a total of 166 species of parasitic copepods, 118 of which are related to fish belonging to the order Siphonostomatoida, which accounts for 70% of parasite species (Morales-Serna et al., 2012).
