Size at first maturity of the chocolate clam Megapitaria squalida

Abril Romo-Piñera, Marcial Arellano Martínez y Federico Andrés García Domínguez

Size at first maturity (SFM) measures the mean size of 50% of the organisms in a given population in sexual activity. It was defined for two populations of M. squalida at La Paz Bay and Magdalena Bay (Baja California Sur, Mexico), by analyzing organisms sampled from February 2007 to December 2008. Organisms were processed (classic histology) to identify sex and gonad development stage, and grouped by length of shell intervals. Data were adjusted to a logistic model to determine the punctual maturity length. The SFM for La Paz Bay was 64.5 mm and 85 mm for Magdalena Bay, for both males and females. It was noted that some organisms showed advanced gametogenesis beginning at 35 mm and 42 mm, respectively. It is suggested that overfishing of the biggest organisms drives the SFM toward smaller clams.
