The Mexican coast produces about 17 thousand tons of bivalves, with Baja California Sur providing the largest volume. Of the three bivalve species of commercial importance in the Mexican Pacific, we made a biological and socio-economic assessment of lion’s paw Nodipecten subnodosus (Sowerby, 1835) clam fishery. Commercial fishing of this mollusk has developed in Laguna Ojo de Liebre Baja California Sur, with a capture of up to 272 tn. in 2008. This species is highly appreciated in national and international markets where the adductor muscle can weigh up to 150 g. On the other hand its shell, which can reach a maximum height of 220 mm, also has ornamental value. The target of this study is to determine whether the operation keeps the resource at under- or over-exploitation levels, its level of maximum sustainable yield and to identify management measures that would be advisable to adopt to ensure a sustainable fishery. We applied a bioeconomic simulation model that integrates the dynamic parameters of this species with socio-economic variables of the fishery. We examined the possible scenarios considering biomass resource and the social and economic benefits. It was found that overfishing has caused the decrease of catches and the diagnosis suggests that to increase the profits of the fishermen, it is advisable to reduce fishing mortality and to increase age at first capture.
