Distribution of Prionace glauca (blue shark) catches and its relation to mesoscale oceanographic dynamics in the Northeastern Tropical Pacific

Rodolfo Vögler, Emilio Beier, Sofía Ortega García y Heriberto Santana-Hernández

We analyzed the spatial and seasonal distribution of Prionace glauca catches and their relationship with mesoscale physical processes in the Eastern Tropical Pacific off Mexico. Sampling was conducted by scientific observers on-board a Mexican long-line fishing fleet which operated in oceanic waters. Sea surface heights and associated geostrophic velocities were calculated for several seasons of 1997 (summer, autumn), 1998 (winter, spring), 1999 (spring, summer, autumn), 2000 (summer, autumn) and 2001 (winter, autumn). Highest catches and effort were concentrated between 17-30 ºN and 106-118 ºW. This area concentrated 86.9% (n= 634) of fishing sets over the 5-year period. Latitudinal and longitudinal displacement of water masses and fishing grounds were observed across El Niño/La Niña cycle. A sharp increase of P. glauca catches was registered Turing 1997-98 El Niño and a progressive northeastward displacement of fishing grounds was detected, especially in summer/1997 and winter/1998. Contrarily, a decrease in P. glauca catches was observed during 1998-99 La Niña with a southeastward displacement of fishing grounds, principally in winter/1999. Fishing sets with the highest catches were located in places with high sea surface gradients and strong geostrophic currents, at the border of meanders and/or eddies (cyclonic and anticyclonic).

Palabras clave: Prionace glauca; mesoscala oceanografica
