In this study, we analyzed the seasonal reproduction of the sailfish Istiophorus platypterus based on the data from the commercial and sport fisheries in the southeast Mexican Pacific. The reproductive activity was analyzed using quantitative histology. From the histological analysis, we identified five stages of ovarian development, eight kinds of oocytes, and two postovulate structures. We found with gonadosomatic index that the species has a broad reproductive period with peaks identified in June (mean monthly GSI = 1.6) and September (mean monthly GSI = 2.3). During the second quarter there were more females, and during the third and fourth quarter we found more males in the samples. We found that the estimates of the frequency distribution of whole oocytes showed that this analysis may be used as a tool to assess maturity. The size at sexual maturity for this species in the Gulf of Tehuantepec is 150.2 cm eye-fork-length.
