Density and growth of mangrove cockle (Anadara tuberculosa) in the Ensenada de La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico: mark and recapture experiments
Esteban Fernando Félix Pico y Mauricio Ramírez Rodríguez
In order to provide information on the possibility of using tagging experiments to study rotating fisheries areas of the mangrove cockle Anadara tuberculosa (Sowerby, 1833) in Baja California Sur, a local experiment was designed in two almost unexploited areas: El Mogote and El Conchalito in the Ensenada de La Paz. In each of them we chose two areas where the number of individuals was estimated and a fraction of them was measured and tagged with numbers in ink that were later covered with resin. Two hundred individuals of lengths 30-99 mm were collected in El Mogote in November 2010. The recaptured cockles in February 2011 were 33%, of which 5.5% were dead. In El Conchalito, one hundred and twelve individuals of lengths 38-83 mm were tagged in October 2010; those recaptured during March 2011 were 19% and there were no dead individuals. The visibility of ink marks was good, although shells developed an opaque film over the marks. Now we are testing with plastic tags.
