Effect of a mild ENSO on the reproduction of the penshell Atrina maura (Sowerby,1835) (Bivalvia:Pinnidae) in Ensenada de La Paz, B.C.S., Mexico

The pen shell Atrina maura is an important fishery resource in Mexico. However, its stock has been depleted over the past decade because of over fishing and possibly by environmental variation. To investigate the influence of the ENSO on A. maura reproduction in Ensenada de La Paz, data collected during 2004-2005 and 2007-2008 were used. Only the comparable months corresponding to “El Niño”, “La Niña”, and “Normal” periods (according with the registry of the Oceanic “El Niño” Index) were considered. A total of 742 organisms was obtained (11-30 cm in height) and histologically processed. The general condition index was significantly higher in “El Niño” (36.5±1.6 SE) (P<0.001) compared with “La Niña” (29.3±1.3 SE), and “Normal” (29.9±1.1 SE) periods. In the same manner, during “El Niño” there were more ripe (55%) but lesser spawning (40%) organisms, together with significantly (P<0.05) more females than males. Whereas, in “La Niña” there was a significantly (P<0.001) lower proportion of reabsorbing gonads (31.2±7.1 SE) compared with “El Niño” (79.7±5.3 SE) and “Normal” (62.1±10 SE), observed from September to November (greater temperature anomalies). The size at first maturity was similar between periods (21 cm height shell). Therefore, in Ensenada de La Paz, lower temperatures (i.e. “La Niña” period) enhance the reproduction of A. maura, and on the contrary, higher temperatures (i.e. “El Niño” period) have negative effects, causing abnormal spawning events and reabsorbing of gametes.
