Spondylus calcifer, the largest species of the family Spondylidae, is distributed from the Gulf of California to the shores of Peru. In Mexico, is under special protection (NOM-ECOL-059-2001) and there is interest for commercial exploitation by coastal fishermen. Despite its importance, studies on its reproduction are scarce, so the aim of this study was to estimate the reproductive cycle by histological methods. We collected 449 individuals (January-December 2009) on the west coast of the Gulf of California (Agua Verde, BCS). The specimens were grouped into 23 intervals of 0.5 cm shell height (AC), where 55% had sizes ranging from 11.8 to 13.8 cm AC. The analysis of the sex ratio indicated significant differences, with males being more abundant than females (1H: 1.64M). Importantly, the presence of two hermaphroditic specimens in April, is the first report of hermaphroditism in this species. Histological analysis of gonads showed that gametogenesis initiated in March and April (44% and 80%), with maturity from May to August (84%, 85%, 89% and 46% respectively). Spawning took place from July to October (7%, 54%, 29% and 36% respectively) when temperatures were between 27° and 29° C, while spent individuals occurred in September and October (58% and 11%). Nearly 100% of the organisms were indistinguishable from November to February. Males and females had similar reproductive cycle. The sizes of the sexes were 9.4-16.3 cm AC for females and males 6.1-16.9 cm AC, a statistically different size structure for the sexes. The size and age of recruitment to reproduction was 11.92 cm AC and 5 years for females and 11.95 cm AC and 5 years for males. S. calcifer is a gonochoristic species with synchronous reproductive cycle. There was a significant direct relationship between sea surface temperature and reproduction.
