In order to describe the spawning habitat characterization of the small pelagic fishes during a period “cool-salty” off Baja California (winter-spring 2006-2008), the single parameter quotient analysis were used to investigate areas of spawning preference, by comparing distributions of spawning products in relation to covariate variables. The eggs and larvae of the most species were found in waters with relatively low sea surface temperature and salinity (17.5 ° C; 33.6 ups), with exception of S. japonicus and M. productus to slightly higher intervals (18.5-20.5° C; 33.8 ups). The spawning products prevailed at intermediate levels of wind speed and plankton biomass ( 8 knots; 100-300 ml per 1000 m3), with some exceptions to higher values (E. mordax, S. japonicus and T. symmetricus). S. sagax, S. japonicus and M. productus were found in waters over continental shelf, whereas E. mordax, T. symmetricus, inclusive S. sagax over shelf break and water depths >1000 m. S. sagax and T. symmetricus predominantly occurred between Ensenada and Punta Baja (lines 100-107), while S. japonicus and M. productus off Magdalena area (lines 130-137). This kind of analysis could be useful to monitoring year to year the proportion of the potential of the spawning habitat related to changes of pelagic ecosystem along the west coast off Baja California Peninsula.
