What fish larvae can tell us about La Niña conditions (1999-2001) in the southern portion of the California Current?

Fish larvae assemblages are useful biological indicators in the Eastern Tropical Pacific for La Niña conditions. During 1999-2001 La Niña conditions, recurrent fish larvae assemblages were recorded in the southern portion of the California Current, off Baja California Peninsula. During the first semester of 1999 fish larvae species composition, distribution and abundance indicated cooling conditions in the environment, similar to those observed during past La Niña conditions, with an emphasis in the high larval abundances of coastal pelagic species, in the presence of "rare" sub arctic fish larvae species and in the wide southern distribution of fish larvae species related to the California Current. Fish larvae assemblages of cold years 2000 and 2001 were more subtle indicators than those of 1999, and than the physical evidence indicating the presence of La Niña event.
