First record of fish larvae Engraulis mordax in Mexican province waters

Alejandro Trinidad Hinojosa Medina, Claudia A. Silva Segundo, René Funes Rodríguez y Martín Enrique Hernández Rivas

The distribution of the northern anchovy Engraulis mordax was considered by many years from British Columbia to Cabo San Lucas, the early 1980's this species was found in landings of the sardine commercial fishery in the Gulf of California, supporting the idea of a recently re-colonization. Species determination of early stages of the Engraulidae family has been controversial in Mexican waters, due to problems to differentiate between E. mordax from other related species. A case in point was, samples from the Gulf of California collected on surveys conducted during 1984 had the evidence of E. mordax early stages, which preceded the unexpected commercial catch in 1986, which at the time was unable to identify due to ignorance of the diagnostic features of the larvae in all species of this family. Already have elements in order to differentiate larvae E. mordax with respect to other species of the family. This offers advantages in the detection and assessment of this resource, such as has been demonstrate using early stages information like good indicators of the spawning biomass. Recently analyzing samples from surveys conducted by the University of Guadalajara off Jalisco and Colima coast (2001-2002), we had the opportunity to identified fish larvae of E. mordax, which means the first record of the extensive spawning habitat in waters of the Mexican Province. Although there is little knowledge of the oceanographic conditions in this area, it appears that the environmental characteristics were suitable for reproduction.
