Seasonalmigrations across different stages of interannual ENSO variability during the recentwarming period (1980-1997) were reconstructed via analysis of relativeabundance indices of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) along the California Current (CC). Interannual changes in seasonalpatterns were identified and characterized for both species. Sardine exhibitedcontinuous latitudinal shifts in seasonal patterns, with the geographicclusters of sardine abundance shifting northward within the CC. Conversely, less significant sardine clusters were observed in the southern region, implying a dynamic evolution of suitable habitats for sardine recruitment. For anchovy, oceanographic fronts appeared to significantly influence its recruitment and distributionpatterns. At an interannual scale, spatial interactions between both species werevisualized by depicting centers of gravity and inertia as spatial indicatorsduring seven distinct SST episodes identified in the CC for the 1980-1997period. Sardine changes at this scale are seemingly related to SST variability, while the spatial abundance pattern of anchovy appeared to be inversely relatedto sardine population abundance, with anchovy abundance increasing in areas andtimes where sardines were absent or at low levels.
