Epibenthic dinoflagellates areeukaryotic, biflagellate microorganisms, associated with the seafloor. Theimportance of this group is due to their participation on matter and energytransfer between the seabed and the water column. The objective of the studywas the morphological and molecular identification of epibenthicdinoflagellates. Sampling was carried out in Bahía Concepción (ElRequesón beach), Bahía de La Paz (La Gaviota island, El Sauzoso beach, LasParcelas and El Tecolote) and Ensenada de La Paz. The dinoflagellates were isolated frommacroalgae samples found at depths < 10 m. In additionally, horizontal trawlsin shallow areas (< 2 m) were carried out. Currently, 34 strains ofepibenthic dinoflagellates, cultured in varying conditions are maintained, isolated between 2015 and 2022. Strains were identified by microscopy (photonmicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy) and sequencing of the 5.8S, 28Sand ITS regions of ribosomal DNA. The combination of these tools allowed theidentification of 11 species of epibenthic dinoflagellates, belonging to thegenera Amphidinium, Coolia, Ostreopsis, Gambierdiscus,Prorocentrum, Symbiodinium and Vulcanodinium. Amphidiniumoperculatum and Vulcanodinium rugosum were identified by means oftheir morphology and reproductive processes, respectively. It was observed thatmorphological differences between species such as Prorocentrum cassubicum and Prorocentrumnorrisianum are subtle, complicating identification even when combiningmorphological and molecular tools. The products of this study include the firstsequences of Ostreopsis lenticularis, Gambierdiscus carpenteri, Prorocentrumconcavum and Prorocentrum cf. norrisianum for Mexico.
