Populationchanges of the scallop Argopecten ventricosus and the impact of harvesting strategies applied during the last strongEl Niño event (2015-2016) are reported, and management recommendations areproposed. The analysis is based on landings statistics and literature reportson the fishery in the Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Over the last10 years, there have been two periods of landings over 12,000 metric tons (liveweight), during 2010 to 2011 and during 2018 to 2019. From 2010 landingsdeclined steadily until the fishery dosure in 2014, and returned in 2018(16,000 t). The fishing seasonoccurs from April to May in shallow areas of Almejas Bay and, during the next monthsthe harvest moves toward Magdalena Bay reaching areas around 25 m depth. Thescallop stock was favored by warm water conditions because the possibleincrease in the larval production and dispersal. Extinct beds and new habitatswere recolonized during these periods, although most become extinct shortlythereafter. Unfortunately, in 2020 catch also declined to 690 t, without anyapparent principal reason. Consequently, nowadays, some fishers are collaboratingwith the government to allocate spat collectors to increase recruitment byrepopulation. Due to the low catch, there are fishers than decide toparticipate in the growing tourist business of sport físhing and whale watching.
