Nitrification and removal of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the hypoxic layer of Alfonso Basin, Gulf of California

Processes for the recycling and removal of nitrogen within the Gulf of California are poorly understood. This study used the Isotope Pairing Technique to investigated potential rates of nitrification between 100 to150m and 300m at La Paz Bay’s Alfonso Basin, during seven sampling excursions between March-2012 and April-2014, as well as rates of anammox and denitrification in February and April-2014. Nitrification is vertically dependent with seasonal variability (2.6-177 nmol·N·l-1·d-1), but comparable with previously registered values in the gulf’s euphotic zone. Denitrification and anammox were detected at every depth sampled, though in general the rates were very low (0.12-4.1 nmol·N·l-1·d-1) in comparison to values observed the eastern tropical north Pacific oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). The results indicate that under hypoxic condition, nitrification may play an important role in the replenishment of reactive forms of nitrogen. On the other hand, anammox could be more viable route for nitrogen removal than heterotrophic processes.
