In order to identify the factors that promote harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Peridinium quadridentatum and their effects on the environment and the phytoplankton community in coasts of Veracruz, we conducted monthly monitoring from March 2016 to February 2017. Blooms of P. quadridentatum occurred during the rainy season, characterized by high surface temperatures and reduced salinity, associated with nutrient increase. The DIN/DIP ratio during P. quadridentatum blooms and the rest of the year indicated that the system is phosphorus limited. Regarding DIN, the high ammonia levels suggest that P. quadridentatum assimilates ammonia preferentially over nitrates. Higher chlorophyll-a concentrations and lower DO were related to P. quadridentatum HABs, in addition to lower species richness and diversity. Peridinium quadridentatum is a local resident species, and as a result of the hypoxic environmental conditions caused by the HABs, it represents a mortality risk for fish in the area.
