Abstract Sardinops sagax is widely distributed on the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. The sardine fishery is one of the most important economic activities in northwest Mexico, in the state of Baja California Sur. Sustainable resource management requires annual monitoring of population dynamics, with emphasis on reproductive season and spawning activity, which is subject to large variations, the effect of exogenous and endogenous response of individuals in time and space . This study aims to obtain an assessment of the participation of females in reproduction according to their age, by histological analysis of the ovaries of sardine sardine caught by the fleet from January to April each year, between 2000 - 2011. Were grouped by age, estimated from length data pattern applied the Von Bertalanffy equation, identified 10 age groups. Also calculated the gonadosomatic index of each individual and by means of a Kruskal-Wallis test, significant differences were between the ages with a p <0.0001. We found that advanced stage ovarian vitellogenesis modal frequency recorded in all ages. The proportion of active females, not reach 50% at age 0, indicates that while participating in production of oocytes, it is of minor importance. Instead it was shown that active female participation increases with increasing age, intense participation in reproductive age groups 2, 3 and 4 projects. It is observed that the highest percentage of organisms captured by the fishing fleet, belong to the age groups 1 and 2, while those in the age group> 7 the frequency is less than 1%.
