Repellent activity of marine macroalgae extracts against Diaphorina citri

Diaphorina citri is an insect vector of the bacteria that causes Huanglongbing disease, producing the death of plants and its crops. There are currently some insecticides that control the insect on the citrus crops, however prolonged use of chemical insecticides creates serious problems in the environment. Some ecofriendly alternatives are the use of natural products, particularly of marine macroalgae extracts, due the presence of compounds with repellent and insecticidal activity. In this study was evaluated repellent activity of three marine macroalgae extracts against D. citri in an olfactometer bioassay under natural conditions. The algal material was collected on the coasts of La Paz, Mexico, and it was processed to obtain crude ethanolic extracts. Our results showed Laurencia lajolla with higher values of repellency over 80% at 24 hours, followed by Sargassum horridum with a repellency of 87% at the beginning at 4 hours, but decreasing to 76% at 24 hours period. Particularly, Caulerpa sertularioides extract register low repellency, acting like an attractant on the citrus leaves. Macroalgae synthesized a huge quantity secondary metabolites with insecticidal, larvicidal and repellent activities against several insects. The positive results with L. lajolla suggest the presence of volatile compounds on the extract, these insecticidal compounds could be isolated and used to formulate new insecticides agents. Marine macroalgae is the new source for insecticides and repellents against plagues that affect commercially important crops and even human health.
