Accumulation-utilization of energy reserves associated with the reproductive cycle of lion-paw scallop (Nodipecten subnodosus) strongly depends on the natural productivity of the site. This study analyzes the accumulation-utilization cycle of lipid classes in several tissues in a wild population of scallops at Laguna Ojo de Liebre, a site of low natural productivity. Five scallops were collected during characteristics periods of the reproductive cycle. Lipid classes were analyzed by thin layer chromatography in muscle, mantle, digestive gland, and female and male gonad. A clear accumulation of all lipid classes were observed in ripe female gonads, but particularly of reserve lipids, such as triglycerides (TG), esterified sterols (SS), and ether-linked glycerides (EG), but also for structural lipids such as free sterols (FS) and phospholipids (PL). In male gonads, significant differences were observed for TG and several PL, although the specific pattern of variation was different than that found for females. Significant variation in digestive gland lipids was observed for reserve lipids (TG, EG, and SS), whereas structural lipids such as FS and PL were not significantly affected. No seasonal variation for lipids in muscle and mantle were found.
