The population genetics studies are of great importance to the management and conservation of species. Besides providing elements for the delineation of population units, evaluate the intra-population decline in terms of its variability. The assessments of the levels of genetic diversity of populations are of special importance when species are economically important, as it requires develop advanced management strategies based on the dynamics of population genetic structure. The aim of this research is to evaluate the levels of genetic variability and differentiation of sailfish in the Mexican Pacific, using sequences of the mitochondrial DNA control region. We analyzed a total of 243 sequences of about 532 bp, samples from four locations in the Mexican Pacific (Mazatlan, Colima, Acapulco y Oaxaca), of which 136 haplotypes were obtained. Haplotype diversity values were relatively high in the four locations (0.9028-0.9825), while the nucleotide diversity values were low (0.005407-0.007213). An Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) showed that the total variance was mainly attributed to the variability within each locality, as the data analyzed do not allow us to infer genetic differences in the Mexican Pacific (?st= -0.0026, p=0.86). The haplotype network showed no phylogeographic pattern, where haplotypes were found homogeneously distributed in the four sampling areas. Finally an analysis of distribution of paired differences showed that this group of organism has undergone population expansion events.
