The pen shell has been intensively exploited provoking a decrease in natural populations. In Ensenada de La Paz, efforts for restocking of pen shell have been tried but seed supplying is required. An alternative for providing these requirements is spat collection from the wild. The present research was made in order to evaluate if it is possible to obtain pen shell seeds using artificial collectors. Hence, in October/2012 collectors were located in three sampling stations, where each main collecting line consisted of 10 lines to which a cluster of three collectors was settled respectively. Collectors were removed after two months. Two pen shell species were identified: Pinna rugosa and Atrina maura. The highest spat collection occurred at station 1 (3.53 ± 0.2 organisms/collector) followed by station 2 (1.63 ± 0.3organisms/collector), and finally the lowest spat collection was in station 3 (0.33 ± 0.2 organisms/collector). In contrast, organisms from station 3 were the largest ones (4.64 ± 0.5 cm), followed by station 2 (4.35 ± 0.3 cm) and station 1 with the smallest sizes (2.96 ± 0.2 cm). Temperatures in all three stations followed similar patterns, where no significant differences were observed. Spat collection in this study was higher than the obtained in previous researches made in Bahia de La Paz, where smaller sizes were found. Therefore, Ensenada de La Paz is an adequate location for pen shell spat collection but further studies to determine the best spat collection season are needed.
