Commercial and synthetic antioxidant supplements are used to reduce oxidative damage in the human body. However, it is known that they can cause side effects such as liver damage and carcinogénesis, thus increasing the interest of researchers around the world seeking new, naturally occurring bioactive compounds. The biological activity of the compounds obtained from Brown algae has shown its potential as a new source of antioxidants with a variety of applications in cosmetics, medicine and aquaculture. Therefore, this study evaluates Sargassum lapazeanum as a potential source of antioxidant compounds that can be used in food or pharmaceutical industry. Activity tests were conducted using the free stable radical scavenger 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) by two methods: colorimetric and bioautographic, calculating the half maximal effective concentration (EC50), it was obtained a high potential from all of the extracts, particulary from the Fraction 6 with a EC50 value of 39.96 µg mL-1. This results shows the potencial antioxidant of this algae, with a antioxidant activity 26 times lesser tan the ascorbic acid used as control. Nevertheless, this fraction could increase its activity with a more detailed purification of the extracts. Further studies are suggested in order to determine the active compounds responsible for its biological activity
