The Campeche Bank in the southern Gulf of Mexico is well known for its intensive production of oil and gas. The Bank supports the largest Mexican offshore industrial petroleum facility, which supplied 82% of oil and 35% of natural gas. It is well know that petroleum contains trace metals such as Cu, Ni, V, and Mo in significant quantities. Therefore the aims of this study were to assess the geochemistry of those elements and to characterize zones influenced biogenic and/or lithogenic. For this proposal were determined elements such as Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Li, V, Pb, and Zn in surface sediments. Samples were digested using four acids, the analysis was with a mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), and methods were validated by certified reference materials. Cu, Mo, Pb, V, and Zn background levels were lower than the Earth crust, probably due to the dilution with carbonates and the intense rains during summer. However enrichment of Ni was determined. Al and Ca distributions were indicators of lithogenic influence in the west area of the lagoon at Boca del Carmen and the predominantly biogenic influence at the east of the lagoon, in Puerto Real.
