?15N in surface sediment in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific: denitrification or early diagenesis
Miryam Juárez Fonseca, Alberto Sánchez González y Eduardo Balart
Eastern Tropical North Pacific is characterized by high primary production and suboxic conditions in the water column with a lower degradation rate of organic matter (OM). These have been used to explain temporal variability in ?15N within of the OMZ and determine changes in denitrification on different time scales. We present ?15N new data from surface sediment which were compared with d15N-NO3- and -PN to investigate the controls on the sedimentary record in ETNP. In the ETNP, the highest sedimentary ?15N values correspond with the highest TN indicating that the isotopic signal is result of the primary biogeochemical signal and no by preferential degradation of the OM during its settling along the water column and early diagenesis.
