Coupled response of rainfall and denitrification to solar forcing during the Holocene in Alfonso Basin

Constanza Ricaurte-Villota, Oscar González Yajimovich y Alberto Sánchez González

The bulk sedimentary ?15N record of Alfonso Basin displayed changes both fromregional source possibly associated with changes in isotopic signal of NO3- dissolved in the Subsurface Subtropical Water (SsStW) and from climatic source governed by solar forcing (Total Solar Irradiance) over the North American Monsoon strength (i.e. rainfall), causing intermediate water suboxia and promoting denitrification in Alfonso Basin. High values of bulk sedimentary ?15N (maximum of 14.5 %0,) agree with increases in land derived organic matter (49.2 %) and with the terrigenous percentage (84.8%), during Middle and Late Holocene suggesting that increasing rainfall and freshwater input leads increased stratification of water column which inhibits vertical mixing producing a reduction in oxygen content in the water column in analready oxygen-poor zone.
