Skeletal deformity in Balistes polylepis (Balistidae) from the southern Gulf of California, Mexico

Ofelia Escobar-Sánchez, Xchel Gabriel Moreno Sánchez y Maribel Carrera-Fernández

The first record of an abnormality in the finescale triggerfish Balistes polylepis is described. In December 2010, a malformed specimen was caught in the southern Gulf of California, Mexico. The abnormality was a skeletal deformation consisting of a reduction in the shape and number of caudal vertebrae. The hypurals were not developed. The cause of finescale triggerfish deformation, who survived weighing approximately 68% less than normal, remained unknown.
