Sistema informático de ictiodiversidad de la Colección Ictológica del CICIMAR-IPN

Manuel Álvaro Pacheco Hoyo, Alberto González Espinoza y José De La Cruz-Agüero

The public databases based on client-server models, open to all members of a scientific discipline and the general public, represent one of the tools for consultation and exchange important information and disclosures in the studies on biodiversity. In this context, the Ichthyological Collection (CI) of Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas (CICIMAR-IPN), houses the most relevant fish collection in Mexico for the Pacific Ocean (6.693 lots, 102,000 specimens, 3 classes, 37 orders, 132 families, 331 genera and 574 species). Actually is part of the National Biodiversity Information System of CONABIO and is the only Latin American fish collection incorporated into the FishBase Project. The database of CI, is managed with the CONABIO´s Biotica 5.0 software and has a computer system (CS) based on client-server model for consultation and interaction with the database users. In this paper we describe the features, performance and operation of the CS for users of the scientific community and general public in order to facilitate access and exchange of information on fish resources deposited in the Cl via the Internet. The CI server is based on Debian GNU / Linux and Apache HTTP Web server, the HTTP/1.1 protocol. The application was developed using the PHP 5.3.1 using the database manager MySQL database and a content management system Joomla 1.5. The information is distributed to users using the web service protocol SOAP (stands for Simple Object Access Protocol) which is thus obtained from a qualified source and with the support of researchers who represent it and keep it updated.
