Fish larvae of Bahia Vizcaino: ten years of community studies

Sylvia Patricia Adelheid Jiménez Rosenberg, Ricardo Javier Saldierna Martínez y Martín Enrique Hernández Rivas

Bahia Vizcaino has been considered as a Priority Marine Area and a Biological Activity Center by the Mexican Government due its high marine biodiversity and relevance in the regional fisheries. This work reflects the result of then years of investigation on the fish larvae community, showing their variations attributed to the seasonal and inter-annual fluctuations like El Nio, La Nia and the Subarctic Water Mass Intrusion during 2003-2006. Zooplankton samples of a total of 33 oceanographic cruises made by IMECOCAL between 1997 and 2006 are analyzed. More than 200 fish taxa represented by their early stages have been recorded, showing important fluctuation in both, their presence and larval abundance that had made possible to characterize Baha Vizcaino and the adjacent oceanic waters as a transitional zone between temperate and tropical-subtropical waters, whit seasonal occurrence commercial species which tend to show the most affected by the inter-annual variability.
