Age determination and growth of Chione californiensis (Broderip, 1835 (Bivalvia: Veneridae) in the Bahia de La Paz, Gulf of California, México

Arturo Tripp Quezada

In the Bahía de La Paz (La Paz Bay) (24° 07´y 24° 21' N, 110° 17' y 110°40' W ) we performed a study on the growth of the clam Chione californiensis by using the growth bands analysis on the shells. For the size analysis on function of the age we use the Von Bertalanffy growth model. To validate the seasonality of the growth bands we captured and measure the size of 60 individuals who presented and average size of 15.38 ± 1.08 mm, these individuals were marked and returned to their habitat to a depth of 6 m, later they were recaptured to monthly during 22 months determinate changes in the size and numbers of growth bands; we collected information about in situ temperature and Clorophile a. We use 217 individuals for the growth analysis based on growth bands in the shell, this individual were collected in Bahía de La Paz. The marked clams had an average monthly growth of 0.40 mm during the 22 months of experiment and we identified an alternation of growth bands, when we observed the presence of both dark bands and hyaline bands, being the first wider being formed during the summer while the hyalines are formed in winter. By counting the growth bands we detected six age groups, the growth equation parameters were: L? = 41.97 mm; k= 0.64 and t0 = -0.02. From the relation height-weight we determinate an alometric growth with values of y = 0.006 x2.87, the clam shells with a height <30 mm have a tendency to further increase its height to their weight, while after 40 mm show a tendency to slow their growth and increase its weight.
