Changes in the intensity of the flows of energy through the ecosystem as an expression of the ecosystem Elath

Mónica Ruiz Barreiro y Francisco Arreguín Sánchez

The ecosystems health is one of the topics of major interest today. Particularly overfishing, in addition to natural disturbances, has led to actions aimed at the conservation of ecosystems in order to maintain a sustainable use. However is not easy to decide at that moment an ecosystem changes of state because of a disturbance or, in conditions of exploitation, where it is possible to maintain a sustainable use, despite the natural variability. This contribution develops and explores the concept of ecosystem health proposed independently by R. Constance and R. Ulanowicz, through the relationship between the Organization and Resilience. The analysis of the dynamics of the ecosystem indicates that tecosystem health is directly associated with changes in the intensity of flows of energy. Under this notion we developed simulation experiments disrupting species of different trophic levels which, independently, were subjected to a disturbance consistently increasing until conditions of reduction of 80% of their abundance. Results show two scenarios: 1) if the intensity is high (represented by the slope of the relationship) affects both organization and resilience, and indicates that the system requires additional energy to contend with the perturbation; 2) if the intensity is low (slope no singinificantly diferente of zero) indicates that it affects resilience but not the Organization, and the system is healthy. Results were analysed suggesting, for the ecosystems studied, possible limits for disturbances to maintain, under the experimental conditions, ecosystems exploited in a sustainable manner.
