Reproductive parameters of the silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis in the Mexican Pacific Ocean
Maribel Carrera Fernández y Felipe Galván-Magaña
The silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis is the most frequently caught species in the arti sanal and long liner fi sheries along the Mexican coast; however the informati on about its biology is limited. We analyzed the reproducti ve parameters of silky sharks in the Mexican Pacifi c Ocean to recommend management measures in diff erent areas depending on the variati ons of these parameters. The informati on comes from biological records from Baja California Sur and the Gulf of Tehuantepec. We also used bibliographic informati on from diff erent locati ons in the Mexican Pacifi c. We esti mated size at maturity (L50) for both sexes. For males the lowest L50 was 174 cm total length (TL) in Colima; while for Baja California Sur and the Gulf of Tehuantepec we obtained similar values (182 cm TL and 185 cm TL respecti vely). The females showed the same trend with a L50 of 175 cm TL for Colima, 183 cm TL for Baja California Sur and the highest L50 of 189 cm TL for the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
