Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Screening of Algal Extracts from Baja California, Mexico

Mauricio Muñoz Ochoa, Jesús Iván Murillo-Álvarez, Gloria María Molina Salinas y Javier Vargas Salinas

The need for new and potent antibacterial drugs has been widely recognized all around the world, in particular new anti-tubercular drugs. In this study sixty two algal samples belonging to the 3 divisions of macroalgae collected along the coast of Baja California Sur (Mexico) were subjected to biological screening. Algal material was individually extracted with ethanol, and tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli by the agar disk-diffusion method at 2 mg disk-1. Activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv was tested by the Alamar blue method and MIC values were determined. Extracts with MIC values < 100 mg mL-1 against M. tuberculosis were additionally subjected to the cytotoxicity assay against VERO cells. 77% of all extracts were active against, at least, one of the target microorganisms. Extracts from Sargassum horridum, Laurencia johnstonii, L. pacifica and Pterosiphonia bipinnata shoed MIC values beteen 12.5 and 13.13 µg mL-1 against M. tuberculosis. S. horridum extract showed a TC50 value of 19.05 µg mL-1, shile, extracts from L. johanstonii and L. pacifica showed a TC50 < 2 µg mL-1.
