Shrimp aquaculture is an important, and growing, economical activity on the coasts of the Baja California peninsula (northwest of Mexico). During the early breeding stages, shrimp larvae are very susceptible of vibriosis. The strategies used by the local shrimp producers to control Vibrio infections involve the utilization of antibiotics (v. gr. oxytetracycline and furoxone). However, very frequently the antibiotics used are ineffective. In our research group, we tested organic extracts from seaweeds in search for new anti-Vibrio agents. Gracilaria vermiculophylla (Ohmi) Papenfuss, 1967 collected at Laguna de San Ignacio (113°14’ N, 26°45’ W) was sequentially extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol. All the three extracts from G. vermiculophylla were tested by the disk-agar diffusion assay against V. harveyi (ATCC 14126), V. campbellii (ATCC 25920), V. proteolyticus (ATCC 15338), V. parahaemolyticus (ATCC 17802), V. carchariae (ATCC 35084), V. natriegens (ATCC 14048) and Listonella pelagia (ATCC 25916). The target microorganisms were culture on Difco Marine Agar 2216 plates at 35°C. The extract obtained with ethyl acetate displayed inhibitory activity against all the seven strains at a concentration of 1 mg disk-1. The extract was fractionated on silica gel. From fractions 1 to 5, fraction 2 eluted with 50% hexane in dichloromethane inhibited all the target microorganisms at 125 mg disk-1.
